Historical Markers Project

Preserving Our Town’s Heritage
One Marker at a Time

In 1975, the Warrensburg Mills Historic District became one of the first areas in the Adirondacks to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A generation later, in 2000–2001, the Hamlet of Warrensburg Historic District earned a place on both the State and National Registers, incorporating over 400 historic resources and encompassing the original mill district. It remains the largest historic district in the Adirondack Region, stretching from Saratoga to the Canadian Border.
This achievement didn’t happen by chance. The Warrensburgh–Thurman Historical Society, in partnership with Warrensburgh Beautification, Inc., led the charge to recognize and preserve these historic spaces. Teresa Whalen of Beautification was instrumental in these efforts.
In 2016, a grant from the Pomeroy Foundation allowed for the installation of a roadside marker at the former hydroelectric plant site across from Curtis Lumber—once home to the dynamo that powered the Warrensburg-to-Queensbury trolley from 1902 to 1927.
Building on that momentum, the Society committed in 2023 to fund additional historic markers. The goal: memorialize significant buildings and locations that reflect the rich heritage of Warrensburg and Thurman. With support from the Warrensburgh Heritage Trail website (developed by Town Historian Sandi Parisi) and a historic property map created during the original registry process, the Society’s Preservation Committee got to work.
Working with Vice President Paul Gilchrist, who sourced a high-quality, cost-effective sign company, the Society placed its first new marker on October 9th, 2023, at the home of John Schroeter in Thurman. This site once served as District School #3, the last one-room school in the Warrensburg Central School District, which closed in 1960. John, a longtime Richards Library trustee, was delighted to honor the building’s legacy.
Other markers have since been installed:
  • The 1806 Presbyterian Church in Thurman (Route 418 and River Road)
  • The 1802 Methodist Church beside the former Marco Polo Pizzeria, the first church in both Thurman and what became Warrensburgh
  • The Hudson River fording place at the Carpenter farm, used since the late 1700s
These markers tell our shared story—quietly but boldly—along our roadsides, inviting residents and visitors alike to pause and reflect.

On July 20, 2025 the Society planted a sign at the site of the house where Cal Wood lived at 463 Mud Street in Thurman. You’ll recall that Cal ambushed and murdered his father-in-law, Leander Pasco, a mile or so down this road as he walked back to his home from Stony Creek Center. In 1892, Cal became the first person electrocuted at Dannemora Prison. Please read the sign for more info. Russ and “Ray” Howe, members of the Society, have remodeled and live in the house.
